Bristol International Airport Pedestrian Tunnels

Magnum are working for Farrans Construction, who are building the South Terminal Extension, at Bristol International Airport.

Whilst the new terminal extension is under construction, passengers need to move across the construction site from the main Terminal in the North to the Departure lounges located in the South.

Magnum were asked to design and build a passenger tunnels.  The tunnels are required to be waterproof and finished internally to permanent building standards.  The whole structure to fit between one floor level.

During the design process and to enable the movement of construction traffic across the site, it was identified that there was a requirement for the installation of gates.  The gates are to be automatically opened and closed.  This was achieved with a remotely operated electrical motors designed specifically for purpose.

Internally the tunnel is finished with cladding to give the passengers the impression they remain inside the terminal building.  The tunnel is classified as Airside, however the surrounding construction site is classified as landside.  Its vital individuals from landside are prevented from entering the tunnel, consequently externally the tunnel is protected with CAA approved security mesh.

The tunnel has also been designed to provide protection for the passengers from the possibility of materials falling from above during the construction process.
In addition, in the event of an emergency, the tunnel becomes a fire escape route.
Magnum employed Haki to design the tunnel and to supply the necessary proprietary equipment. During the Design process, a mock up of the Tunnel was built by Magnum at Haki’s training centre in Coventry. The Principal Contractor and Bristol International Airports Project management and security representatives were invited to attend and review the proposed arrangement of the tunnel and gates.
